Dr. Loosen

A small slice of perfection, the four-acre Erdener Prälat produces some of the greatest wines in the Mosel valley. It has 100 percent south-facing red slate soil and an extraordinarily warm microclimate, yielding wines of unequaled power and nobility. The vineyard's exposure, combined with the warming effect of the river and the massive, heat-retaining cliffs that surround it, ensures exceptional ripeness in every vintage. The complex, well-weathered red slate of Erdener Prälat produces majestic, multi-faceted wines with stunning depth and concentration.

Wine Enthusiast

Wow. This gorgeous dessert-style auslese explodes from the glass in a cavalcade of sweet fruit and spice. Honeyed peaches and dried apricots are most prominent, but shadings of cinnamon and allspice give complexity, while crisp acids provide impeccable balance on the long finish. Delicious now, this wine should easily evolve for up to 40 years.

Score: 96. —Joe Czerwinski, December 15, 2008.

Wine Spectator

A beauty. Clarity and delicacy are its hallmarks, setting up the pure peach, apple and lime flavors. There's just a touch of mineral now, which should emerge with time. Has fine length. Seamless. Drink now through 2028.

Score: 93. —Bruce Sanderson, April 30, 2008.

Wine Advocate

Loosen's 2006 Erdener Pralat Rieslng Auslese smells typically of tangerine and honey, along with brown spices and suggestions of herbal elixir. As in the case of the corresponding Treppchen - and in keeping with the "new" approach being taken here with Pralat (see issue 163) - this displays remarkable levity and refreshing citricity, its obviously high residual sugar (obvious given the 7.5% alcohol) well buffered, resulting in an absence of any superfluous sweetness. Significantly, there is not even a hint (at this youthful juncture, anyway) of caramelization. Long and subtle in its finishing interplay of citrus, herbal essences, honey, nut oils, brown spices, and mineral notes, this should drink magnificently for more than 30 years.

Score: 93. —David Schildknecht, October 2008.
